Iowa Ham Balls

Ingredients

  • 450g ham, finely ground
  • 500g bolognese mince (could be just beef or just pork)
  • 1 cup granita crackers (approx 1/2 packet), finely ground
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tin tomato sauce
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tsp dry mustard seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat fan forced oven to 160°C
  2. To make ground ham, cut into small chunks and add to food processor. Pulse until fine, approx 20 pulses
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ham, the mince, the granita cracker crumbs, the milk and egg
  4. Form the mixture into large meatballs, 1/3 cup in size. Place in a large baking dish. You will get 12-15 meatballs
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the rest of the ingredients
  6. Pour sauce over the meatballs
  7. Bake for 1 hour, baste twice during the cooking
  8. Let the meatballs cool for 5-10 minutes and then serve with mashed potatoes and veggies
